I was on a very tight schedule when shooting this show and only had 1-1/2 hours to spend on Araki as well as to shoot for 4 other projects at MoSEX. Consequently you will find some photos blurry or out of focus as I didn’t have the time to do much chimping and re-shoots.

I shot a few infrared flash photos, but the Museum didn’t allow flash photography, so I didn’t do much of it. If you walk around with the flash it draws attention from security. Then you have the problem of trying to explain to them that it is invisible flash. They think you are a mental case!

Infrared flash photography of this sort is very hard to do. The ONLY light comes from the flash and that one light has to expose the photo from 3 feet to 25 feet. (And maybe it is further than 25 feet, I didn’t measure it.) Lots of work with PP to get it doable.

The show was an excellent retrospective of Araki. The only 2 things that were somewhat disappointing were:

1- There were no spermanko photos with Araki’s dried sperm on them.

2- There was a accusation of some sort of abuse from Araki and one of his models complained. The photo of her was removed. A small video explaining the issue was not working,  there was just a hole in the wall instead of the video screen. (See photo above) The security said it had been removed for repair.

No posed or staged photos…all candids. Circle fisheye were taken at 1/8 to 1/15 of a second hand-held, shot wide open and pushed a stop or more. Most of the photos were taken with a little Sony point and shoot cam and pushed 1 to 1-1/2 stops as well.
